Kindle 2 Won't save last page read

First, let me say that this is not the same issue as a K2 not saving a bookmark. It very well may be an issue with my downloaded book, but here goes.

Behavior: When I'm reading and shut off the power and then turn it back on, it will go to "page 1" of my book and not the page I last read. When I try to "Synch to Furthest Page Read", it will always go to "page 1" and never goes to my current (last page) page. Going in to sleep mode, it always retains my current page. If I go to the home screen and power off, it will go back to my page when I click my book.

Amazon Support: When I called them, they said that I should always keep it in sleep mode (!!???!!) and never power it off, if I want it to retain my place in the book. I didn't like that answer so I called again. By the way, I'm less than impressed with their support. Nice people, but they just don't get it. Anyway, this time the tech said that this behavior is what a K2 is supposed to do (my coworker has one and it doesn't) and that the K1 did retain last place read. I'm wondering if my coworker got a referbed K1 in K2 clothing...and it was sold to her as new...

On other bookreaders, the general cause of this problem is a corrupt file system. Connect your Kindle to the PC via USB, and check the Kindle's file system for errors.

Appl846,

In order for the K2 to remember your last page read, ensure that your wireless is on when you shut off the device. That is how the device syncs with Amazon's site.

Let me know if this works for you.

If true, and I'm not saying is isn't, Thats just silly. Why would the device have to sync with Amazon to remember the last page read?

The book should open to the last page read regardless of whether your wireless is on or off.

Does the k2 operate differently from the k1 in this respect?

You don't need to have wireless on for it to remember the last page read. You'd need it on to sync last read between Kindles or between a Kindle and an iPhone/Touch.

Yeah, if it's not automatically going back to the last page there's probably something wrong with it. Contact Kindle support.

I have only read 5 books on the K2 so far, but I have not had any problem with any of them with not going to the current page read. I do not keep my wireless on unless I am downloading or browsing. My K2 keeps its place wether it is asleep or off.

Now, I will have to say that I have only read books that I have downloaded from Amazon or off a well known site. What is the specific book to which you are referring and where did you get it? I would suggest that someone else also install the book to see if the problem is duplicated. That would be the easy way to determine where the problem lies.

Nope, that should make absolutely no difference.

However, having someone else with a K2 install the same book is a great idea......then Amazon can't say "No problem with your reader" if it bookmarks correctly on another K2.

Can you do a test for us.

First turn your wireless off.
Open a book to some location.
Then turn "off" your kindle 2
Then... wait a minute or two and turn it back on

Can you confirm that it opened to the same place, the location in the open book, where it was when you turned it off.

Thanks,
BOb

I just tried your test, BOb, and I was returned to the spot where I was when I turned it off.
