Translated by Edgar Jepson in 1912 from the 1909 novel "La double vie de Théophraste Longuet"

Theophrastus Longuet, a mild-mannered manufacturer of rubber stamps, tours the former Paris "Conciergerie", prison, where he appears to become possessed, recalling a previous life nearly 200 years before, in the 1700s.

Then he was "Cartouche", the notorious Parisian criminal, and soon Longuet's life is spinning out of control.

A very early Leroux, possibly his second novel. Leroux of course went on to write "The Phantom of the Opera" as well as many crime novels.
