Mary Elizabeth Braddon (4 October 1835 4 February 1915) was a popular English novelist of the Victorian era. Her prolific pen produced more than 80 novels with inventive plots. The most famous is
(1862), which won her recognition, and a fortune as a bestseller. It has remained in print since its publication and has been dramatized and filmed several times.
Braddons legacy is tied to the sensation fiction of the 1860s, but she also wrote a number of ghost stories, and the novel
(1891), a pact with the devil story.
