Historical Fiction Maindron, Maurice: L'incomparable Florimond [FRENCH]

This is Maurice Maindron (1857-1911) at his best. The action takes place at a time when de Cardinal Richelieu ruled France with an iron fist during the first decades of the 17th century rather than the troubled times of Henri de Navarre and the religious wars of the late 16th century. From the start the stage is set for a fight to the death between the non-pareil Florimond and his mother, typical wealthy shopkeepers who have bought their way into nobility and Catherine de Lépinière and her husband-to-be Louis-Antoine de Bannes who stand for the more traditional and more principled aristocracy generally supported by the local peasantry.
