FREE/BARGAIN - Children's, YA

We point out free and bargain Children's and YA titles to each other, and recommend certain books that are/were free (or the opposite!).

Because Kindle freebies are easiest to find, the majority of the books listed are from Amazon, but freebies and bargains from other retailers and in other formats are more than welcome!

In case no retailer is specifically mentioned in a post, it is safe to assume it's for Amazon US.

Be aware that many freebies are only free for a day, so grab them fast!

Title: The Centaur.
Format: Pdf
Author(s): May Swenson.
Publisher: Utah State University Press.
Pages: 32.
Ebook Rating/Number of Reviews (Amazon): No ratings at Amazon; rated 4.00 (3) at GoodReads.
Price: $0.00.
Lowest Price at (or through Amazon) if available there: $12.57 (Used--"Very Good").
Book Description (Amazon):
Can it be there was only one
summer that I was ten?

First published in 1956, May Swenson’s "The Centaur" remains one of her most popular and most anthologized poems. This is its first appearance as a picture book for children. In images bright and brisk and tangible, the poet re-creates the joy of riding a stick horse through a small-town summer. We find ourselves, with her, straddling “a long limber horse with . . . a few leaves for a tail,” and pounding through the lovely dust along the path by the old canal. As her shape shifts from child to horse and back, we know exactly what she feels.

Sherry Meidell’s water-color illustrations perfectly convey the wit and beauty of May Swenson’s poem. These are playful, satisfying images full of vitality and imagination. Meidell handles the joy of poem’s fantasy and the joy of its occasional naughtiness with equal success.

Comments: I believe this to be a legal free download because is was posted in the digital commons collection of the publisher, Utah State University Press. Also, it is posted in the Creative Writing Commons.

Thanks! FYI, the following McGuffey's freebies are downloadable, with no obligation, sign-up, or email required, at http://www.learn-to-read-prince-george.com/McGuffey-readers.html. They, in turn, were taken from Project Gutenberg.

Thanks. Yeah, they're readily available. There are also at least a couple of dozen free, full-version (not "snippets" (which are worthless) or previews) at Google Books. I think that they are all copies of the originals, which is to say that they haven't been revised by anyone in recent times. One reason that I went ahead and posted the one that I did is that it had been revised, although I cannot speak to the value or quality of the revision work.

Part of the reason for their popularity, I suppose, is that many homeschoolers and others seem to think that the material published today is not up to the standards of that published years ago. They've had a second life with these people. And most, if not all, of the McGuffey readers are out of copyright, so they're cheap if not free.

Amazon states that this book is suitable for Age Level 12-18/Grade Level 7-12.

There are currently two books in The Atlantis Grail series. This is the first one.

Qualify (The Atlantis Grail Book 1). By Vera Nazarian. Rated 4.6 stars, from 321 reviews at Amazon. Print list price $17.95; digital list price $4.99; Kindle price now $0.00. Norilana Books, publisher. 600 pages. http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00RALWMLM/.

Book Description
You have two options. You die, or you Qualify.

The year is 2047. An extinction-level asteroid is hurtling toward Earth, and the descendants of ancient Atlantis have returned from the stars in their silver ships to offer humanity help.

But there’s a catch.

They can only take a tiny percent of the Earth’s population back to the colony planet Atlantis. And in order to be chosen, you must be a teen, you must be bright, talented, and athletic, and you must Qualify.

Sixteen-year-old Gwenevere Lark is determined not only to Qualify but to rescue her entire family.

Because there’s a loophole.

If you are good enough to Qualify, you are eligible to compete in the brutal games of the Atlantis Grail, which grants all winners the laurels, high tech luxuries, and full privileges of Atlantis Citizenship. And if you are in the Top Ten, then all your wildest wishes are granted… Such as curing your mother’s cancer.

There is only one problem.

Gwen Lark is known as a klutz and a nerd. While she’s a hotshot in classics, history, science, and languages, the closest she’s come to sports is a backyard pool and a skateboard.

This time she is in over her head, and in for a fight of her life, against impossible odds and world-class competition—including Logan Sangre, the most amazing guy in her school, the one she’s been crushing on, and who doesn’t seem to know she exists.

Because every other teen on Earth has the same idea.

You Qualify or you die.

Most kids, especially boys, love comics.

Well, an organization with the website www.pacer.org has produced at least one comic book for those who have been affected by bullying. It seems, to me, that that might be a good way for shy children, or those otherwise afraid to speak up, to get help if they are faced with bullying at school or elsewhere.

The comics are drawn, at least, by Daniel Keane of Chicago.

The pdf ebook is free. It is about 28 pages long.

Here is the direct download link.

Adults might be interested in this free pdf, Student Victimization in U.S. Schools, published by the IES National Center for Education Sciences. This ebook does not give resources for parents of bullied children, it provides results, with commentary, on the "results from the 2009 school crime supplement to the National Crime Victimization Survey." Download it directly from here.
