failed to download metadata

I've had a reconditioned Mac Book Pro with Mojave for three months - love it. Also use Calibre on a Linux machine, before that Windows.

With the mac Download Metadata requests come back opening a window advising 'failed to download metadata', with an option to see the problem:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "site-packages/calibre/utils/ipc/simple_worker.py", line 54, in run
File "site-packages/calibre/utils/ipc/__init__.py", line 23, in eintr_retry_call
EOFError

I have no idea what's going on here. Both iOS and Calibre are up to date - iOS is mojave for this 8 year old machine.

Would love to fix it. Linux version runs beautifully.

thank you in advance

You might have better luck posting this on the calibre forum.
