Washington Irving (1783-1859) was one of the first US writers to find fame outside America. After the collapse of the family business in 1815 he moved to Europe, where he stayed for the next 17 years. The Sketch-Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. is a selection of essays which he sent back to New York for publication during 1819-1820. Most of them are descriptions of English life, but among them are some classic tales, including The Spectre Bridegroom, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow and Rip van Winkle.

The source for this version is Gutenberg, however Irving was very fond of footnotes and in the Gutenberg ebooks these appear scattered through the text as dictated by the scanning. I have moved them all to the end and grouped them by chapters, with hyperlinks forward and back.
