Set in the era of emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, a period when there is a persistent underground movement to restore the Bourbon Monarchy. The Man in Grey, whose name is given only as "Fernand", is an agent of the Minister of Justice, whose task it is to discover and suppress such tendencies.

Here are five longish short stories of the exploits of the Man in Grey, which together form an episodic novel.

1: Silver-Leg
2: The Spaniard
3: The Mystery Of Marie Vaillant
4: The Emeralds Of Mademoiselle Philippa
5: The Bourbon Prince
