Mary Ann (or Marian) Evans (1819-1880) was an editor, translator, poet, essayist, short story writer, and novelist who wrote under the name of George Eliot for all but one of her books.

Silas Marner: the Weaver of Raveloe was first published in 1861 and was her fourth book. Silas Marner is a short-sighted cataleptic with very limited social skills. In Part 1 of the book he is robbed and ostracised. He eventually adopts a two year old girl whose mother has died outside his house. In Part 2, set 16 years later, he has been transformed by caring for her, and by her love for him.
