Mary Ann (or Marian) Evans (1819-1880) was an editor, translator, and novelist who wrote under the name of George Eliot for all but one of her books. In 1854 she entered into a de facto marriage with George Henry Lewes which lasted until his death in 1878. Her brother Isaac refused to have any further contact with her.

The Mill on the Floss was her third novel, was first published in 1860, and was set in the early 1830s in Lincolnshire. It has a complex plot dealing with love, duty, and fate.

The text was taken from the University of Adelaide ebook library, and checked against the 1860 William Blackwood and Sons edition. I have silently corrected typos, replaced italics and diacritics, used British English, and made changes to spelling, punctuation, and hyphenation using oxford*
