Anton Chekhov was born in 1860, the grandson of a serf who had bought his own freedom, and died of tuberculosis in 1904, a renowned doctor, playright, writer of hundreds of short stories, and friend of Leo Tolstoy.

This ebook contains 21 short stories set in Russia towards the end of the 19th Century. Many of them deal with the poor, and many of them have a pervasive sense of despair and hopelessness.

The short stories included in this ebook are: The Schoolmistress, A Nervous Breakdown, Misery, Champagne, After the Theatre, A Lady's Story, In Exile, The Cattle Dealers, Sorrow, On Official Duty, The First-Class Passenger, A Tragic Actor, A Transgression, Small Fry, The Requiem, In the Coach House, Panic Fears, The Bet, The Head Gardener's Story, The Beauties, and The Shoemaker and the Devil.

The text for this ebook was taken from The University of Adelaide ebook library, and checked against the Chatto and Windus 1920 version on the Internet Archive. I have silently corrected typos, curled quotes, replaced italics, diacritics, and scene breaks, used British English, and made changes to spelling and hyphenation using oxforddictionaries.com.

Thanks for your feedback; it's very much appreciated. Do please let me know if you find any typos etc.

I'm currently working on The Horse Stealers by Chekhov - it should be ready next week.

Will keep my eye out for that next one. I think I noticed one or two minor typos in "The Murder". Will go back over when I have a chance. 'bye for now
