An illegitimate child, born in the Auvergne in France in 1770, raised in Livorno in Italy, Anthony Adverse is apprenticed to a merchant, travels extensively between the new world and the old.

The novel follows his rises and falls, his brief ventures in the slave trade, and major ventures in high finance, his marriages, and disasters, to his final adventures in Mexico.

A bestseller in its day, over 800 pages in hardback, 550,000 words, so vast that the movie covers only a part of it.

It was offered as a 3-volume novel, or as a massive single volume. A postwar Paperback edition was published in 3 volumes.
