Wallace, Lew: Ben-Hur. v1. 9 May 07
Lew Wallace's "Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ" was a massive "best-seller" in its day (it was published in 1880). Everyone's seen at least one of the four movie versions of it, but how many people today have read the book? Well, now's your chance!
"Ben-Hur" is the fictional story of Judah Ben-Hur who, during the reign of the Roman Emperor Tiberius, is enslaved through the betrayal of his Roman friend Messala. Embittered and vengeful after regaining his freedom, he is redeemed after encountering Jesus and witnessing his crucifixion.

A book published in 1880?
It had some ludicrously large initial print run, like a million copies. There are probably a fair few first editions out there .
Hmmmm, I had better go check it... I wonder if it's just a first edition of a later version? It's possible it's not an 1880 book. I didn't purchase it specifically to get a first edition, so I guess I didn't really try very hard to confirm that part. I hope it's not packed in a box, because now I'm really curious!
I read a paperback of it that was so old I *thought* it was a first edition!
A million books in 1880? That is insane! The
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hollows of its day!
