More help needed, please
The story is at the stage where Cosima has had two children by Wagner, but is living with von Bülow and he knows of the relationship. They have a row, she walks out and he says to himself: Perhaps after all
bei Muttern am besten as they used to say in Berlin.
What would this be in English?

IMHO, it should read
bei Muttern ist es am besten = it's best at mother's place. (If you want to Google Translate it, drop the
n in Mutter
n, which is a typical feature of the Berlin dialect.)
IMHO, the implied meaning is something like: maybe I should simply go back to my mother who'd spoil me rotten.
BTW, "bei Muttern" is nowadays mostly used in restaurant advertising slogans, e.g. "Futtern wie bei Muttern" = great home-cooked meals like your mom used to make.

Agreed with both the translation and the interpretation.

Thanks again. I'm a little reluctant to add too much to the original text, so I'll probably just use something like 'it's best at mother's place'. I'll have to go back and review the context again. In the original book von Bülow's mother is a dreadful tyrant. But it could be made to fit; he's certainly very distressed. I'll think about it overnight.
