R. Austin Freeman (1862-1943) was a medical practitioner forced to retire in 1904 because of ill health. He wrote many novels and short stories, some with other authors.

The Unwilling Adventurer is the story of a young man who was accused of murder, press-ganged, marooned, forced to serve on a pirate ship and on a slave-trader, rescued by a lawyer, and married to his childhood sweetheart.

Even the 'detective' stories can be divided into Thorndyke and non Thorndyke stories, and there are several other books (eg The Golden Pool) and collections which are not detective stories. Wikipedia has a good summary.
