Longfellow's epic poem "The Song of Hiawatha", originally published in 1855, and based on the legends of the Ojibway North American Indians, has been one of my favourite things to read since I was a teenager. Here it is for the Reader.

Enjoy!

EDIT: 2 Jun 07

PG have just released a new version, correcting many minor errors. Brought this version into conformance with that and uploaded v2 accordingly.

EDIT: 23 Aug 08

Improved layout. Added a cover image.

Lord, Harry! Hiawatha!

Forced reading for seventh grade in Maine, where Longfellow was a native son. Years ago; I'll bet not now.

When he killed the Mudjokivis,
Of the skin he made him mittens,
Made them with the skin side outside,
He, to get the warm side inside,
Put the inside skin side outside;
He, to get the cold side outside,
Put the warm side fur side inside,
That's why he put the fur side inside,
Why he put the skin side outside,
Why he turned them inside outside.

Well we all have different interests
Some like one thing, some another.
I like reading Hiawatha
If you don't then choose another.
