Is my Kindle 3 "Special Offers" ?
#1  rolgiati 02-26-2021, 06:31 AM
Bought a 2nd hand Kindle 3, to make sure I have a spare after another one recently gave up the ghost. (I dislike tactile screens and virtual keyboards)

Is there a simple way to tell whether it is a "Special Offers" model, or not ?

I suggest you register your K3 to make sure it's not blacklisted.

To find out if it is special offers or not, connect to your WiFi and you'll see the ads if it is.

Thank you, but I would like to know _without_ activating the WiFi..

But you need to activate WiFi to register so you'll know if it's blacklisted or not. If it is blacklisted, it won't do as a spare Kindle.#

You should see an advert on the bottom of the home screen if it is the special offers firmware.

What's the point of registering ?

(I load all my books from the computer)

If you never turn on wifi and aren't going to register, what do you care whether it is a "special offers" version or not?

Even with WiFI off, the home screen has an advert regardless of how long WiFi is off.

Well, then, that is how to tell whether it is a special offers version or not.

Why didn't you say so in you first reply?

Because I didn't have my PW3 handy to have a look.

- The WiFi has NEVER been on yet, so I have no advert (yet).
- I would like to know if I can turn it on, without starting adverts, so I can for instance consult Wikipedia..

Would the firmware nversion depend on Ads/No Ads ?
The serial number prefix ?
