Ann Radcliffe (1764-1823) lived a sheltered and private life, and declined most opportunities to appear in public. She became the most famous English Gothic novelist of her time, and was renowned for her use of pseudomedieval fiction with an atmosphere of mystery and terror, and for the many poems in her books.

The Castles of Athlin and Dunblayne was the first of her six novels, and was published without identifying the author by Thomas Hookham in 1789 for his circulation library. It tells the story of a feud between two Scottish clans, and the eventual reconciliation of the survivors through marriages.
