R. Austin Freeman (1862-1943) was a medical practitioner forced to retire in 1904 because of ill health. He wrote many detective novels and short stories, some with other authors.

The Stoneware Monkey was published in England in 1938, and is a complex mystery involving the theft of some diamonds, a murdered policeman, poisoning with arsenic, and Dr. Freeman’s views on modern art.

The text was taken from Project Gutenberg Australia, and checked against the 1973 Lythway Press edition. I have silently replaced a missing section, corrected typos, curled quotation marks, used British English, and made changes to spelling, punctuation, and hyphenation using the Collins online dictionary.
