Poke 3 questions

I'm a Kindle user (Paper White 2) who's thinking of switching to a Poke 3.

1. How well does the text-to-speech (TTS) work? I'm a slow reader and would love to be able to read my epub books while listening (I'm hoping it would help me learn to read faster).

2. Can you adjust the speed of the TTS?

I love the idea of being able to run different reading apps (Instapaper, Pocket, Kindle, etc).

I've not tried a reader that supports TTS, but I was working on a dictionary app that used TTS.
I was just using the Google TTS engine.
There are settings under Settings > Accessibility > Text-to-speech output for default speech rate and pitch. An app can also override these.
Since my app is a language dictionary I have the speech rate set at 0.5
This would not be a good rate for reading a book!

What's the default epub app that the Boox uses? I'm wondering if I could download it on my phone from the Google Play store and try the TTS just to see how well it works.

Try AlreaderXPro. It has good TTS controls. You can adjust speed and pitch.

Russian Onyx models have this app as default reader.

For engines, try Ivona TTS (that’s what I am currently using). Its voices are much better regarding intonation and pauses.

Ok one last question, can you set the current book as the lock screen cover? I'm used to this on my hacked Kindle but it's not a must since the Poke 3 adds so much more capability.

I don't do the book cover sleep screen, but some readers have the option to save the cover to some location.

I forget, but if you disable some Onyx stuff the location changes.
In any case, my sleep images are at:
Code
/data/local/assets/images/shutdown.png
/data/local/assets/images/standby-1.png
/data/local/assets/images/standby-2.png
/data/local/assets/images/standby-3.png

Looks like I'll have to wait till the black version gets in stock on the US store.

I'd buy the special edition except I'm worried about the white back getting dirty and if the back could be wiped clean with a wash cloth & cleaner.

I wish Best Buy was doing the free cover as they have it in stock.

To get major firmware updates, you can get firmware from Onyx Boox official site: International. Then, you scroll to find your tablet (so Poke3-Leaf series link).

For incremental updates/patches (such as 3.2.2) what you need to do is do it on your device. Go to Settings > Firmware Updates. You can "Check for updates" if it's not there then it's not been rolled out for your device yet and you just have to wait. If it is saying an update is ready, click Download.

Here's where my memory gets murky, but once it is downloaded, it will ask you if you want to update now or not. If your device isn't rooted and you just want to update straight away then select that you want to updte now. If you are rooted then click that you don't want to update now (or similar language. I can't remember exactly what the option says but just don't upgrade now). The update.upx file will then be sitting just loose in the root of your internal storage and you can decrypt it etc. and go from there.
