Hi my name is George Cook and I have published a new book for the Kindle.

My book is titled Let's Talk Honestly: One Black Man's Thoughts. It is collection of poems and essays inspired by my experience's as a soldier, community activist, time in politics, coach, husband, and father. And yes they are inpsired by my experiences as a black man living in the United States .

My hope is that by reading by sharing these poems that many will see that while there are some seriuos issues in the Black Community that many African Americans want the same thingnmany Americans do. Better schools, security, and yes, the American Dream.

Check out my book for just $1.50 here

Hi glc3, sounds very interesting! Let us know when it is available in other digital formats. Publishing just for the Kindle really limits the exposure for your writing.

The book is also available directly through my site in a PDF format. You can get it here:

Ouch! PDF is not a good format for ebooks.

What other formats would you suggest and what format would you say is the most common. I have it in 4 other formats.

PDF is the format that people who don't read ebooks read. Most people who read ebooks regularly don't care for it (there is a vociferous minority who love it, however) because it needs to be formatted for the display to really work well, and most PDFs are formatted very poorly for the current generation of 6" screens.

Beyond PDF I'd recommend epub, mobi, and Sony's lrf. Epub is great in that it's being supported on more and more devices and it's easy to convert from. Mobi is essentially the same format used on the Kindle, it can be read on tons of devices and is probably the most used format in North America. There are other formats, but those are the big three right now. If you could only do two, take epub and mobi, because the Sony Reader can read epub, though some people do prefer the look of lrf which supports full justification.

Quite a few think one of the great features of the Kindle 1 is that you can turn full justification off (unless the stupid publisher locked in justification in the file .... don't do that, leave it to the reader software), so that the small screen doesn't have huge gaps between words - which is one thing that makes it harder for poor readers to comprehend, it turns out, plus looks extra ugly if you use a very large font, as well as makes it more difficult for those with poor eyesight that need that large font (different line lengths help them keep their place).

Unfortunately, this is just one of the many features removed by Amazon in their dumbing down of each successive generation of their hardware (it's like they are removing functions because they don't want to take calls about them: hey, we got 3% calls last week on how to change justification, so let's remove that feature and reduce our call center cost... 10% were people that couldn't remember how to get out of sleep mode after they changed their screensavers, so let's remove the option and force everyone to stare at dead white people they grew to hate during high school literature class....).
