Henry James (1843–1916) was an American born author thought to be a key transitional figure between realism and modernism, and to be best known for novels and novellas on morals and alienation. He spent much of his adult life in Europe, settled in England, and became a British citizen.

Terminations was published in 1895 in the US and the UK, and contains four short stories (The Death of the Lion, The Coxon Fund, The Middle Years, and The Altar of the Dead). Each story has at least a mention of the process of writing. The text was extracted from a desktop reader edition from Wikisource, and checked against the 1895 Harper & Brothers edition in the Internet Archive.
