Hi all,
I've been using calibre with success during the last few years, last time I uploaded an ebook was this january (sort of); last week I tried to upload a new ebook but it failed with an input/output error; today I tried again, same error:

calibre, version 4.3.0
ERROR: Error: Error communicating with device

[Errno 5] Input/output error

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 90, in run
self.result = self.func(*self.args, **self.kwargs)
File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/gui2/device.py", line 594, in _upload_books
metadata=metadata, end_session=False)
File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/devices/usbms/driver.py", line 325, in upload_books
filepath = self.put_file(infile, filepath, replace_file=True)
File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/devices/usbms/cli.py", line 53, in put_file
dest, actual_path = case_preserving_open_file(path)
File "/usr/lib/calibre/calibre/utils/filenames.py", line 205, in case_preserving_open_file
os.fsync(ans.fileno())
OSError: [Errno 5] Input/output error

I'm on a linux box (archlinux); when I connect my kindle via USB, the filemanager shows files and folders from my kindle, and I can navigate them; when I open calibre, device is recognized, and I can see ebooks loaded on my device; when I try to transfer an ebook from calibre to kindle, I receive the error mentioned above, and I cannot navigate files and folders through the linux filemanager anymore.

If I connect my kindle on windows 7, windows tells me it needs to be repaired, but I refused to let windows do that.

Thanks in advance for any help, bye!

Been a while since I messed with Linux
you might try FSCK on the device.
Or you could try a reboot of the Kindle (menu:settings:Menu: Restart) and hope that repairs the file system.

IIRC Also, be sure nothing else is accessing the kindle (that includes looking at the directories).

Personally, Windows 7 or 10 has never harmed my kindle repairing the file system.

Either run fsck.vfat ont he kindle or reset it. That's an I/O error indicating file operations nt he kindles storage are failing.

Thanks for your fast replies!
I tried the solutions you suggested, with no success
- on linux fsck.vat repaired some files, but when I connected back my kindle to calibre, same error as above;
- on windows 7 I tried to repair the fs again, and windows too repaired some files; but no changes on calibre;
- i restarted my kindle, same error;
- i reset my kindle (menu > settings > menu > reset): no use: same error again.

I forgot to mention that maybe I messed up my kindle when I connected to the PC when it was totally out of charge (I wasn't been using it for some months): maybe due to the fact it has no charge, its file system wasn't able to mount properly...

What can I do now?
Thanks in advance, bye!

If resetting the kindle did not fix it then its hardwareis failing.

So what should I do, throw away my kindle and buy a new one? No way to fix it?
To be quite honest I consider it fairly new, I read about a dozen ebooks on it, not anymore...

Contact Amazon. <<<
Broken hardware is not a Calibre fixable issue. Note: We do sometimes find workarounds for SOME issues, but not every issue allows this.

Thanks for all of your support, I'll try with Amazon, then

I'm annoyed by the hardware malfunction, but obviously my disappointment isn't headed to you, that have been very kind and helpful indeed (and Calibre is a must-have application for all ebook readers).

I will let you know, bye bye!

That sounds like a damaged file to me. Maybe your A/V is mangling it during transfer.
